Reverse Engineering

Digital Mock Up Utility

DMU is a virtual representation of the product organized and aggregated according to design or process logic in order to support the development of the same product and of the manufacturing process. In every step of the Product Development Process, the “virtual prototype” (whole Products or part of it) represented by DMU represents the firm reference for the Products assembly . As an extension, term “DMU” is utilized also in order to indicate the instruments and methods that make creation , display, handling of and checks on the virtual prototype possible.

Then, DMU simulates shape and location of product sub components, assembled in such a way as to create a single assembly, and/or possible parts of manufacturing equipment. The DMU environment does not include the simulations concerning those intrinsic functions of product sub components and systems (“performances”) that cannot be referred to external overall dimensions and positions in space. Fig. 1 shows and example of DMU concerning and engine and under body frame compartment. The complexity of the graph would not permit the analysis of such an assembly in a traditional CAD environment.

For the simulation of moving parts and assemblies of mechanism, a complete DMU representation also requires including the movement information in addition to the static geometry information. An interface between the DMU system and the multi body simulation environment of ADAMS provides a way of transferring the movement of parts calculated in the simulation into the DMU environment. The displacement information can be used for animations and for generating movement envelopes for clearance analyses.

In a virtual product development process dealing large number of assemblies DMU is the tool which determines the integration quality of assemblies in a tight product envelope which meets the product fictional, serviceability and manufacturability requirements.
